Saina Nehwal is a renowned Indian badminton player. She has won numerous titles throughout her career and has made a name for herself as one of the top players in the world. She is actually the first Indian woman in the top ranks of the world.

Saina Nehwal was born on 17 March 1990 in the Indian state of Haryana. Harvir Singh Nehwal and Usha Rani Nawal are her parents. She started playing badminton at the age of eight. At sixteen she was the national junior champion. She was also the national junior champion in the next year's BWF World Junior Championships. She also won the Philippines Open title and the Under-19 National Championships. She began to participate in the international badminton circuit during this time.

She grew up in Haryana and later moved to Hyderabad, where she has lived since 1998. She was assisted by many coaches during her training. Among them was Pullela Gopichand, who helped her win numerous tournaments. Nehwal was the Indian women’s doubles champion in 2006. She has won numerous international titles since then, including the Badminton Asia Championship (China Taipei Open), the Malaysia Masters and the Singapore Open. This was the very first time an Indian woman has won all three major individual tournaments in one year.

A talented badminton player, Nehwal was ranked as the world's best player in the first half of 2015. Unfortunately, injuries in both of the years preceding the Rio Olympics had a negative impact on her performance.
